It is an absolute big fat icy cold NO from me. Please do not waste your money for that tour to the Mekong delta or whatever you are thinking of.
As a Vietnamese, I always find it surprising how Mekong delta region manages to attract so many foreign tourists, maybe it is the cheapest and most profitable kind of tour to organize for tour companies and sounds exotic to foreign tourists? It has occured to me many times when a foreign friend tells me they have been to Vietnam solely to visit this Mekong delta, I honestl feel nothing but sorry for them. I live in Vungtau, South East region of Vietnam which is only 500km away btw. I have been to Mekong delta only once in my life despite living so close by and didn’t even like it, I think it is a terrible tourist trap. I am not planning to go there again anytime soon unless really necessary, not like I have anything against them but seriously why traveling half the globe to see such place?
The culture of this region is nothing similar to the rest of the country, neither does the cuisine nor people mindset. I just cannot understand, if you want architecture, or history go to Hue or Hanoi, if you want some of modern-wannabe piece of Vietnam then go to Saigon or Nha Trang, if you want a relaxed holiday trip, go to Phan Thiet, Phu Quoc, Sapa, or Halong, Trang An most of these places are breathtakingly beautiful and unique in their own ways, at the same time can well serve those who have adventurous blood too, so why on earth Mekong delta? If you know the movie District 13, then it is just like visiting District 13 on your trip to Paris. My answer will surely upset those Vietnamese come from that region but sorry fellows, it is really not that great.
