These following countries are very positively perceived in Vietnam, for reasons listed below (combination of truth and perception):

The USA: entrepreneurialism, prosperity, freedom, innovation, political and military power, pop culture (see Huyen Nguyen's answer to Why do Vietnamese have such a favorable view of the US despite the destruction caused by the US in the Vietnam War? )

Britain: scientific innovation, famous universities, prestige of the English language

France: architecture, literature, cultural sophistication

Germany and Scandinavian countries: efficiency, discipline, integrity, being peaceful, humanitarian

Hmm, there is not one answer. We admire China for its culture and civilization, that the Vietnamese absorbed and live by. But we (VN and China) have been losing a lot to the European civilization, now we are hopping to catching up. It does look good.

I myself emigrated and have been living in the US for 50 years. Do I think that the Vietnamese over all should admire the US? No. Overall the US has been good for me and my family, but it is the very best? No. I love the US for its openness, freedom of speech and the “American dream.” But I would move for a better health care system and less gun violence. Over all , I would not dream of moving to any where else, but I would not say that the Vietnamese are admiring or should admire the US over all other countries.

We admire many countries, but the most admired that we openly declare as such, were Japan and Soviet Union. For Soviet Union, i don’t think i have to explain why, since many countries admired Soviet Union.

Our admiration toward Japan started since Meiji reformation, even today we still look upon them as an inspiration to improve ourselves. During early 20th century, we even had the Đông Du movenment, rallied intellectuals and students to study in Japan and bring their knowledge to Vietnam. During the 2 world wars, while their recklessness caused deadly famine in Vietnam, we still don’t hate them. Their soldiers absolute bravery in battles and suicidal last stands fascinated us. As Vương Khả Sơn who wrote “Ký ức chiến tranh” stated, Vietnamese sodiers Vietnam War see themselves as modern ninjas.

After WW2, the way Japan recovered from war to thrive again, greatly impressed Vietnam. With Japan helps and investment in Vietnam, along with their… outlandish forms of entertainment, the love and admiration are cemented.

1. Most Vietnamese people very admire Japanese for their diligence and high sense of responsibility. Hard work and loyalty with the company is also a special feature that under developed countries need to learn and follow. The product "made in japan" is obviously the best.

2. Vietnamese people admire Chinese people for their ancient civilization. Many inventions in the world are also derived from China. They are famous people in doing business.

3. Vietnamese people love Korean people about movies and k-pop, and popular products like Samsung cell phones, cosmetics, and car manufacturing technology of Hyundai and Kia. Recently, with the great contribution to the Vietnam national football team of coach Pak Hang Seo, the Vietnamese people more and more admire the Korean people.

4. The Vietnamese admire Americans for their freedom, as well as the superiority in the production of defense equipment.

5. There are many countries that Vietnamese people admire, but i don’t have time to write :)

This answer is based upon my friend and my own personal experience, so it may different to more systematic answer.

There are lots of countries that can be considered the best like among Vietnamese, along with them i also include some of the reason why they popular.

Japan: manga - anime culture, food such as sushi and ramen, great quality brand electric good, discipline, devoted culture. Plus after Vietnam open since 90s, Japan has been one of the countries that offer great help. Even though Vietnam currently at the end of Japan fever, there still a great amount of Japan admirers among Vietnamese.

Korea: pop song, television drama, food such as korean bbq, kimbap and kimchi were great hits. Along with Japan, Korea also one of the earlies countries that invest into Vietnam.

USA: in short, Holywood ???? and then their pop culture. A great number of Vietnamese immigrant also contribute greatly to the love of US.

German: great quality good, great work policy.

France: Paris, city of love. Also art and great food.

China: it may surprise many people. But Vietnamese do love China culture, and it is also China that lots of Vietnamese hate the most, due to various reason. It is a love hate relationship that need a deep research to fully understand it, but for now, Vietnamese people do love China literature, television drama and movie, food and song. Russia: great help, in the past, in the present. Russia culture is not that popular among Vietnamese, even at the greatest height back in 60s 70s. But USSR/ Russia cartoon(few in numbers, but quite good), quality good, technical school and college, and song still hold the heart of many Vietnamese.

If you look at history and geography, Vietnam should have high relationship with China and neighbors Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. I rarely hear about these specific countries in classes or family talks in Vietnamese, though they are present from heritage and what I know with some learning though mostly innate. China has had a large influence on Vietnam, even without I reading historical texts written in Vietnamese. It is sufficient to read a historian’s view on the development of civilizatio...

Before answering your question, can I ask you one? What country do the people in your country admire the most? Can you answer this for me? In my opinion, you should not ask the general question like this, you know ??? You ask for opinions of some guys in this web and attribute them to all Vietnamese people, wow, that’s ridiculous. I am sorry if I am so rude, but that’s all. Ah, if you want to have a “ simple” answer, this is mine: “ No country in this world I admire the most, but the most I love is Vietnam :))” Thanks for asking. ( I think if you want to know more about Vietnam, you should read the news or make friends with some Vietnamese to know more about their thoughts, their opinions, and, I politely suggest that you might use the word “ you” instead of “ Vietnamese people” to ask, it helps you have the more exact ones.)

The answers before mine have already pointed out some of Vietnamese’s favorites like Japan, the US and hell even China if we only take into account the culture. However, it all missed the real elephant in the room.

It has always been this country:

(For anyone still confused, this is the flag of the Republic of Cuba).

Why do Vietnamese love Cuba, you ask?

No complicated history involved. No invasion plans and no hostility shown. As an added bonus, the Cubans brothers are really faraway and not really relevant in the world order. The only thing Cuba has done to Vietnam were and are being supportive of Vietnam. What’s not to love?

The other favorites have some really known minus point in a Vietnamese’s eyes. The US for racism, past shitty war and “questionable” actions recently which includes involvement in several coup and an anti-communist resurgence. France was always not remembered fondly by any sides of the Vietnam War except people with really really bad moral standards and what do you mean “France is still collecting colonial taxes”? China is self-explanatory. Japan in recent years has gained a reputation of a depressing society with people good at marketing. in Vietnam. South Korea has always been very controversial in Vietnam, although people will say that they like SK in general because it is the truth :Vietnamese do like SK as a whole. Germany is a good contender, however there are few meaningful interactions between Vietnam and Germany until very recently.

Fidel Castro. An American can spend his days loathing him and I will not judge him, however in Vietnam he is remembered fondly with his looks and his famous quote: “For Vietnam, Cuba is ready to sacrifice its own blood”. Taken out of context, this might seem as some sort of puppet presenting loyalty to its master. To a Vietnamese, this is a promise that Cuba will support Vietnam, and Vietnam is ready to do the same.

Added bonus: beautiful sceneries, nice cigars, good-looking women and a top-notch medical service.

Seriously google Vietnam Cuba and you will have an impression that there is some sort of brotherhood going on.

No data for this, but when you live with people, you’ll experience this. This depends pretty much on time, like some kinds of trend, and also depends on regions. For example, in the past, people used to admire Chinese. Yes, the Chinese. Because they archieved many great things that Vietnamese should learn from. Chinese things became really something in Vietnam, from ancient novels, dramas, and costumes. And now many people hates China, so that admiration stops right there. In the war, while the North admired Soviet, the south instead admired America. Then at some time they admired Japanese. Because they’re so organized, and so brave. It’s so hard right now if Vietnamese people is admiring someone, it’s easier to ask whom they love now. The answer will vary, but with more obvious answers. Some still say they love Chinese culture, some say they love Korea, Japan, or America. I think that’s all they think about, and they don’t care much about other countries, especially other ASEAN countries.

Most probably Japan, and then Singapore, as role models for development. And then maybe some Nordic countries for their dream income, top high quality products, and their famous way of life, ideologies like Danish hygge or Finnish sisu, however not as role models since they have very different people and culture.
