Why do Vietnamese people don't use dairy products in their meal?

Dairy products have previously not been part of the Vietnamese diet. Perhaps many people do not use dairy products because these products have commonly become available only in the last ten years or so. Dairy products are still not commonly available in villages.

Another factor, perhaps, is that like many other east Asians and south-east Asians, many Vietnamese lack the enzyme lactase and so are unable to digest milk. Simply, it makes them feel sick.

First of all, historically, dairy products were never a part of our history. Vietnam since ancient times relies heavily on rice as the main food source with little to no husbandry except for water buffalo mostly for plowing. We don’t have great plains that are suitable for large herds of cattle.

Secondly, the temperature is high, therefore, storing these products might be nearly impossible.

Therefore, we lack the lactase (the enzyme needed to breakdown lactose in dairy products), so the experience is quite unpleasant after consuming those things.

However, nowadays, dairy products are presenting more and more often in family milk, mostly as skim milk for kids/teenagers and butter for breakfast and sometimes cooking.

Intolerance in their system for one thing. Distasteful for another. However Vietnamese just don't like food that are creamy (creamy in a milky way). Most Vietnamese would struggle to eat things that are too creamy because they are not used to the taste. They can eat it but would not be able to finish as the taste is not good to them. It's what Vietnamese call “ ngán” , difficult to swallow. Not prominently introduced to their culture-no advertising and it’s only in the past 10 years that it has come a little bit forward

Firstly dairy products are not Vietnamese traditional food. They are new to the Vietnamese.

Secondly, they are not tasty in a hot climate zone.

The Vietnamese may eat more dairy products in the future. However, because of the climate, the Vietnamese will never eat dairy products as much as people in the cool climate areas.
