America had never been as divided during the Vietnam War since the Civil War. In 1965 the troops that were going over weren't volunteer anymore, which didn't exactly make Americans happy. More the 1.5 million young men were drafted. Most of the people who were drafted were from the poor or low class background.During president Johnson's time the number of people fighting and dying was very high especially the African american race took the brunt of the deaths. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke out about that subject because it wasn't fair. During these times American collage campus's were the center for anti-war protest's.
