Why do Vietnamese Americans use the South Vietnamese flag?

The same way people still fly the Confederate flags even though it no longer has meaning.

Like many answers about this topic, people fly that flag because they have not escape their past. The still look at the past like it’s their most glorious and happy moment. They fought for that regime , believed in that regime and their friends died for it.

Now, if you ask me i will say that it is a dangerous thing to do. Being too attached to the past is the same as being too attached to your ex. What’s done is done, there will always be something out there that’s better.

For most, it is nostalgia. It is the flag of the country they fought for, and for which many of their comrades died. For others, it is the hope that some day it will be revived.

Because it’s their flag during the First South Vietnam and Second South Vietnam regime.

After the liberal assault of NVA in 1975 to SaiGon, many South Vietnamese who cooperated with America fled to America to live and became Vietnamese American, they still use that flag because it’s the flag from their birth to know and live under for many years.

Because to them it is still their flag. The will not accept the communist rule in Vietnam. For a time back in the eighties, the north had spies amongst the VN immigrants that reported on families who had the flag of South Vietnam. They would then cause more misery to families still in Vietnam. That has long ceased as far as I know.

They use this flag for identity. They were the first Vietnamese group immigrated to America, to most Western countries and to any countries that accepted them as refugees.

Because it is our flag. Million of South Vietnamese civilians and soldiers have died for it. We completely reject the yellow star blood stained flag of North Viet Nam.
