Conical hats are a traditional product of Vietnam. Vietnamese farmers often prefer them because they are not only used to shade rain and sun but also to fan when hot, to store light items, it is also a fashion accessory that reputable firms in the world want It doesn't work either

Hi

I guess you probably saw the conical hat in some movies about Vietnam war. The conical hats are special feature of North Vietnam soldiers. This kind of hat was designed by Chinese alliance for North Vietnam army that become popular image. The hat suitable for Vietnam’s specific weather usually under dense tropical forest in battle situation. Nowadays we don't use it anymore especially young people. You can rarely see this hat of old veteran who want still store it for their memory.

The hat is a genius design to deal with monsoon rains. Water rolls right off them. People still wear them to work in the rice fields in the countryside. You will see outdoor workers in the city wearing them too (construction sites, outdoor markets) because they offer good shade.

The conical hats you’re talking about are known in Vietnamese as “ nón lá” or quite literally “leaf hat”.

While not so common in large cities such as Saigon which are rapidly developing and modernizing, these hats are a common sight in the countryside where they are most stereotypically worn by farmers working in their rice paddies.

As they are very cheap (about 5000 Dong or $0.25 cents or less), lightweight and offer good protection from the sun and rain, they are well liked.
