Bill Clinton repaired most of the damage. Whatever you think of him, the man doesn’t lack charisma or eloquence. He was even better received in Vietnam than Obama.

Even before Clinton, the average Vietnamese mostly saw America as a bad boy nation. And when you’ve both given each other some missing teeth there’s not much to hold against the bad boy.

A lot of Americans actually visited Vietnam after the war and unlike the politicians, these people were neither self-righteous nor pretentious.

The Surinamese think no more of the American war than they do of the French war. Both are in the past, history. The Vietnamese achieved their goal, getting foreign powers out of their country. They put their energy toward the future, not the past.

But who hates the nation, the anti-war movement was also led by progressive Americans who protested in support of Vietnam, after learning that their government had cheated so far.

Vietnamese never really hated the US, in fact Ho Chi Mihn the leader of the vietcong drafted a constitution that mirrored our own and was open to the western powers, they wanted independence but the French.

When the US soldiers were in the south they were generally friendly with the locals its not till later when the vietcong would hide among the populace did the US soldiers become more wary of the vietnamese but in the mind of the US soldier they were their to save the people, the people were not their enemies.

Many vietnamese live here in the US and have family back in Vietnam exposing them to American culture

Vietnam is currently in the processes of naturally democratizing and becoming capitalistic, therefore they are being exposed to American culture

Many tourist visit Vietnam and I guess that since their opinion of us is high we aren't being shitty guests?
