No problems to rent motorbike in Sapa, though Sapa is for trekking, so you do not need one (except if you want to go to bac ha for the markets (Can Cau Saturday, Bac ha Sunday), and you visit Along Bay on Land (Ninh Binh) on a bicycle (motorbike necessary only if you want to go to Khen Ga, Phat Diem, etc.).
Hire a bicycle and run around Hanoi is good experience.
I should go to Sapa by train and then rent a motorbike when you are in the city for a day or two and move on to your next location.
i've been living in Hanoi for about a year now, and I'd definitely recommend buying or renting your own bike to do your trip. It's easy to get a bike in Hanoi, and you can ride from there to places like Ninh Binh, Cuc Phuong, Tam Dao etc. You could also put your bike on the train and take it up to Sapa, or ride it there! The best place i know to rent/buy bikes in Hanoi is Phung Motorbike, which is at no. 13 Ngo Huyen street (near the cathedral).
