We are travelling in April. we love quiet clean beaches and would love some recommendations of where to go. Also can we hire a van and a driver to get between places ?. We are thinking of going from HCMC up to around Nha Trang but are open to suggestions ?

Mui ne (Ham tien), Nha trang, Hoi an (An bang and Cua dai beaches) Danang (My khe beach/ China beach) and beautiful Phu quoc island with some amazing beaches. In a nutshell,
Start researching.

HCMC to Nha Trang in a van with driver and return costs will be very expensive. However if you do want to do this I would start in HCMC travel to Vung Tau and along the coast to La Gi, Ke Ga, Phan Thiet and on to Ham Tien, breaking the journey with overnights along the way. You may not get to Nha Trang but you will have a great VN coastal experience.
I suppose its up to your budget. Accommodation along this route will not be very much, maybe $15 max per room and as it's not a very well travelled route you will be a novelty.

In Vietnam flying is not as expensive and definitely not as tedious as traveling by road is. The main beach destinations reachable by air travel are Phu Quoc island, Da Nangh, and Nha Trang. The Mui Ne beach requires travel by road or by train (or both).
P.S. There is also Vung Tau near HCMC, but I never heard anyone speaking in superlatives about this beach. Da Nangh and Nha Trang could be reached by train too. Phu Quoc is probably best reached by air. Hoi An is near Da Nang and requires road travel for a bit.
