Because of the remarkable durability of Chinese civilization as well as its marvelous technological and economic innovations, other cultures began to imitate China. Japan, Korea, and Vietnam were all drawn into China's cultural and political orbit in the post classical period. Each country interacted with China differently.

As a strong regional power China exerted great control on Korea, Vietnam, and Japan both in culture and politics. Most recently Vietnam was closely aligned with China during the Vietnam War for supplies and support, North Korea maintains strong trade relations with China, and Japan & South Korea have aligned themselves with the US to protect against China.

With its vast size and history China has had a huge influence on all of Asia. In particular Korea, Vietnam, and Japan have all experienced this influence directly. Japanese writing is derived from Chinese, and Korea and Vietnam have both warred with and been politically engaged with China throughout history.
