They didn't know they face what, and they don't know what they fight for.
They did not know who was the enemy and who was just a non-combatant. They were fighting an enemy who mostly was an insurgent, one who did not wear a uniform. Many of our troops were draftees who did not want to be there. The moral was low due to lack of a real reason to be fighting. They had not been really attacked.
On their way to fight, there were not enough boats, men were dropped off too far off shore and drowned under the weight of their equipment. The horses were also landed in a haphazard manner. In the hour & half fight, the Rough Riders lost 8 men dead. The unit also suffered 34 wounded. Thanks &
