Did Vietnamese soldiers hide in trees?

I served a year in a line (rifle) company in Northern I Corps (Quang Tri Province) ‘69–’70. Much of the province, nearly all the mountains, were covered with single canopy jungle, which provided excellent concealment. I never heard of enemy soldiers in trees. The idea is ludicrous.

Not many, but I did see many PIECES of NVA in trees after a B-52 or heavy artillery strike. Grotesque.

The Vietnamese hid EVERYWHERE . . . you could be on a patrol, they would be three feet away from you and you’d never know until it was too late.

During the Vietnam/American war, there were instances where Vietnamese snipers hid in trees. Being up high allowed them to spot the enemy farther away. But many other Vietnamese hid in underground tunnels. And some of these tunnels were located below enemy bases.

Yes. Australian troops his in trees in Papua New Guinea in WW2. They'd shoot at Japanese troops!

If they did the USMC was ready for them. In ITR in 1970 our quick kill marksmanship training, in addition to pop-up targets, included shooting at washers thrown into the air like skeet shooting. We were told it was so we could kill VC flying on broomsticks but it would work even better on VC in trees as they couldn’t move as fast.

And if they sent us to Oz, those monkeys were toast.

Absolutely! So did Americans. Rubber producing trees are very tall and close enough to form a canopy that blocks the sun. That darkness provides cover for troops resting or moving especially along the Cambodian border around the village of Tay Ninh. Lots of rubber trees in Vietnam. Around Cu Chi, Viet Cong hid in tunnels. Lots of trees were sprayed with Agent Orange to kill the canopy leaves. Many died from that chemical.

According to my older brother who served two tours, the enemy ( predicate the term Vietnamese) North Vietnamese Army ( NVA) & Viet Cong hid everywhere from underground tunnels to using grass, bushes, trees, any/ all other jungle vegetation, & mud to cover themselves in order to blend in with the environment (camouflage) to limit/deny opposing forces in targeting them.
