I was wondering where the best place in HCMC to buy some fabric to have some light casual dresses made would be? In HCMC for 4 days then off to Hue but would probably have them madein Hoi An if I never had enough time in HCMC or Hue. Thanks for any help. Cheers.

If you are looking for buttons, lace, or any sort of embellishments in general for your dresses, there is another market in district 5 that has a HUGE selection. It's at the intersection of Tran Hung Dao and Chau Van Liem, Q5. Very little English is spoken at this market as not many tourists visit.

Last year a hotel staff recommended me 2 fabric shops having fabrics good for the long costume Vietnam ladies wear and other casual dresses. She gave me 2 names "Thai Tuan" and "Phuoc Thinh". I have gone to both and like them a lot. The prices are fixed and I don't have to worry about being charged tourist price. I also went to Tan Dinh Market and saw many other types of fabric. I bought from a shop on the street, opposite the market. Very inexpensive.

Your best bet is in and around Tan Dinh Market on Hai Ba Trung Street in District 3. You will find virtually any type of fabric imaginable (cotton, jersey, linen, silk, denim, etc). The stalls inside the main entrance of the market (in that center aisle) tend to be pricier than those on the side aisles, so make sure to explore once you're in there. There are also a few shops on the main street (Hai Ba Trung) that have pretty reasonable prices (Nhat Ai is one). Most of the shops will speak a bit of English.
