Why did president truman support frances claim to vietnam although he opposed colonialism forever taken

President Truman received heavy pressure from Britain and France to support the French's effort to reassert control in Vietnam. Truman was not against the war in Vietnam because he was against communism. He was against the fact that Vietnam was supposedly an "unwinnable" war.
