VERMILLION RUSSELL G. VERMILLION Col. US Army (Ret.) On August 27, 2009. Beloved husband of Norma (Rogers) Vermillion and adored father of Eric Vermillion (San Francisco), Mark Vermillion (New Hampshire) and Julia Vermillion (Reston). Devoted brother of Doris Lyle (Ohio). Loving grandfather of, Mark, Jennifer, and Jim. Born July 2, 1928, Russ graduated from Akron West High School in 1946 and attended Akron University, a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, and the Omicron Delta Kappa academic honor society, graduating in 1952. He graduated with an MBA from Syracuse University in 1959. He was commissioned in the US Army in 1952 and served combat tours in Korea and twice in Vietnam. He had assignments in a number of command and staff positions, including Professor of Military Science at Western Michigan University, as G-4 of the 101st Airborne Division and G-1 of Ft Campbell, KY, as well as assignments in Orleans, France; Ft Lee, VA and the Pentagon. Upon retirement from the Army, Russ became a professor at the Prince George''s Community College, where he also was the Chair of the Business department, retiring in 1998. Russ served both as the Treasurer of the West Springfield Civic Association and the Northern Virginia Association of History, as well as volunteer docent at the Ft Ward Museum in Alexandria, Va. His dry, wry and keen sense of gentle humor will be missed by those who knew him. Russ was a leader that people naturally turned to and liked. He is greatly admired and respected by his students for the collegial way in which he approached helping them learn. The family prefers memorial contributions be made in his name to the USO, the American Chestnut Foundation or Fort Ward Museum in Alexandria, Va. Services will be held at 1 p.m, November 30, 2009 at Ft Myer, VA in the Old Post Chapel with interment following at the Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. A reception will immediately follow. Arrangements by the Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield, VA
