The role of the United States in the Vietnam War began soon after the Second World War and escalated into full commitment during what is termed the Vietnam War from 1955 to 1975. President Johnson addressed Congress asking for more political power to utilize American military power in South Vietnam using the attack on the Maddox as cause to get what he wanted.
