McCarthy vehemently opposed the Vietnam War. His campaign increased popular opposition to the war. He was a man of honesty and integrity and inspired an entire generation to become actively involved in the political and civic life of our country.

Eugene McCarthy was a politician, poet, and a long-time member of the United States Congress from Minnesota. He was anti-war and opposed to the Vietnam War. In 1968, McCarthy ran against incumbent President Lyndon Johnson in the New Hampshire Democratic primary, with the intention of influencing the federal government to curtail its involvement in the Vietnam War. McCarthy's campaign increased popular opposition to the war in Vietnam.
